Un-Ad-Like Ideas

(That Didn’t Make It)

Commercials are great. But commercials aren’t always the best solution to branding or advertising.

While I’ve been lucky to make some non-ad ads (see: Sony Skyfall Game, US Bank Nostalchic promotion, and others), all too often, the ideas that sit outside of the norm (or don’t fit a specific media buy) never make it beyond the presentation deck. Which is a shame.

Here is a quick cross-section of few ideas that shoulda been made.

Cruzan Rum: Cruzan Cola

Cruzan makes excellent rum with pure cane sugar. But what does it matter if you just add cola with high-fructose corn syrup? So we created a companion cola that would immediately show how seriously we take our rum.

Target Baby: Baby Billboards

Target wanted to let people know that they are a one-stop destination for everything baby.
We came up with a simple, fun, attention-getting solution: put baby billboards next to big target billboards.

Delta Airlines: Sitcom

At a time when the relationship between airlines and passengers was a strained as ever, Delta needed a way to diffuse the situation.

To show that the employees do the best they can with the situation they’re in. And that pilots, flight attendants, and passengers are really all on the same side.

So we came up with a sitcom to humanize the people behind the uniforms.

Nike: RC Runners

Nike FREEs were launching, so we created an event to get New York’s attention.
